A variable refrigerant flow system is a type of central air conditioner that operates as a large-scale ductless HVAC system for high capacity operation.

The VRF system uses multiple, smaller units in place of one large unit to heat and cool a building and can do both simultaneously.

Each indoor unit has its own thermostat, which allows each room to be set at different temperatures depending on how warm or cold you want it to feel in each room, which improves energy consumption.

VRF systems are much more efficient than traditional central AC systems because they don’t have to waste energy cooling unused areas of your home. They also require less maintenance than conventional systems, as each unit operates independently. So, while people think they’re more complex, bulky, and energy-consuming, the opposite is actually true.

While VRF systems have many advantages over traditional heating and cooling solutions, they’re not without their drawbacks.

If the refrigerant leaks into a room that people occupy, they can experience significant health consequences. Also, because of the system’s complexity, fixing refrigerant leaks can be a challenge even for experienced HVAC technicians.

Also, VRF systems depend on the outside temperature, which means they’re not ideal for areas that experience high temperatures, especially if you’re in an industry that relies on heating and cooling like a hospital.
